Extension of Galiña Azul Nursery School in Lalín 2000 Industrial Park
***
Located in Lalín 2000 Industrial Park, next to Carballeira das Casianas woodland, Galiña Azul Nursery School is being transformed to increase its capacity, improve its internal layout and provide more comfortable, accessible and energy-efficient spaces.
The project combines the comprehensive renovation of the existing building with a new extension, bringing together the different volumes added over time and creating a more unified architectural identity.
The internal layout is reorganised to meet the nursery's current needs. Four new classrooms are created, storage capacity is increased, and management, staff and support facilities are improved. Circulation routes and connections between spaces are also optimised.
The main entrance is redesigned around a new shared reception area, providing space for arrivals, waiting and the orderly storage of pushchairs. A large canopy shelters families as they enter the building, creating a sheltered transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The extension features extensive glazing facing the Carballeira das Casianas, strengthening the visual connection with the surrounding woodland. The new classrooms open directly onto the outdoor play area through covered terraces, allowing children to enjoy outdoor spaces with protection from rain and direct sunlight.
Externally, a new insulated envelope clad in grey metal sheeting brings the building's different volumes together and improves its thermal performance. The works also address existing water ingress issues and reduce future maintenance requirements.
Energy efficiency is another key element of the project. The existing heating system is replaced with an air-source heat pump system, heat-recovery ventilation is introduced, and windows, doors and selected equipment are upgraded. These improvements help enhance indoor air quality and thermal comfort.
The result is a larger, more functional and energy-efficient nursery school, with spaces tailored to current educational and childcare needs and a stronger connection with the natural surroundings. The project retains the building's existing use while ensuring the continued operation of the facility.
